Ekspan is a Sheffield based structural engineering company set in the heart of the City’s steel sector on Brightside Lane.
We have teamed up with Open Door Theatre Company, a Sheffield based theatre group, to transform our 15,000 sq ft Brightside factory into a live theatre space for the staging of George Orwell’s iconic novel ‘1984’ - where only a venue of this size would do it justice.
This all came about through a chance conversation one evening, regarding the lack of performance space in Sheffield, between Matthew Dronfield, CEO of Ekspan, and Barbara Bentley, Open Door’s Artistic Director. After further discussions it didn’t take long for the idea of staging ‘1984’ in our new factory to take root.
This unique collaboration is appropriately labelled the ‘Brightside Project’, where as a joint venture, both Ekspan and Open Door Theatre Company feel, this is an excellent opportunity for two worlds, that of industry and the arts, to come together under one roof, in a highly creative and innovative way.
Ekspan for our part, as well as providing the venue, are actively involved in the marketing and project managing of the event. We welcome any innovative opportunity that will make heads turn, and at the same time also help charity and give something back to the local community - especially in challenging times with many people facing uncertainty and a constant stream of bad news.
Ekspan believe this imaginative, innovative, and thought provoking play can break through the gloom, and provide an exciting alternative experience for all theatre goers (locally and nationally), engage with local community, and openly welcome and encourage new audiences to share this theatre experience with us.
